Tezcatlipoca is one of the most powerful and feared deities in the Mexica and Mesoamerican pantheon, whose name in Nahuatl means “Smoking Mirror.” He is the god of Night, the North, Night Winds, Discord, Providence, and War. He represents absolute power, omnipresence, and the changing and unpredictable nature of the universe.
Attributes and Representation
The Mirror: His main attribute is the obsidian mirror (or a smoking obsidian fragment) on his chest. This mirror allowed him to see all that happened in the world and to know the secrets of humanity.
Association with Night and the North: He is intrinsically connected to the starry night and with the northern direction (Mictlampa), the realm of the dead and uncertainty.
Earthly Incarnation: He could manifest on Earth in different forms, including that of a jaguar (Tepeyollotl).
Symbolic Color: He is linked to the color black and smoke.
Cosmic Role and Rivalry
Rivalry with Quetzalcoatl: Tezcatlipoca is the antagonist and cosmic twin of Quetzalcoatl. While Quetzalcoatl represents light, order, and benevolent sacrifice, Tezcatlipoca represents darkness, chaos, inevitable fate, and brute force.
Creator and Destroyer: He is a dual figure. He actively participated in the creation of the world alongside Quetzalcoatl, but is also responsible for the destruction of the first eras or “Suns” (especially the First Sun, which he ruled himself).
Destiny: As the god of Providence, he was believed to govern the destiny of men and nations. He was unpredictable: he could reward with wealth and power, or punish cruelly and suddenly with misfortune or illness.
Powers and Elements
Omnipresence and Omniscience: Thanks to his mirror, his power lay in his ability to see and know everything. No one could hide their actions from him.
Lord of Warriors: He was the patron of warriors and invoked in battle. The power of war was not only physical but also strategic, tied to cunning and betrayal.
Dark Magic: He was associated with black magic and sorcerers.
Moral Judgment: He acted as a judge, testing humans with temptations and punishing those who were arrogant or who committed moral faults.

El Señor del Espejo Humeante y la Noche
Tezcatlipoca es una de las deidades más poderosas y temidas del panteón mexica y mesoamericano, cuyo nombre en náhuatl significa “Espejo Humeante”. Es el dios de la Noche, el Norte, los Vientos Nocturnos, la Discordia, la Providencia y la Guerra. Representa el poder absoluto, la omnipresencia y la naturaleza cambiante e impredecible del universo.
Atributos y Representación
El Espejo: Su principal atributo es el espejo de obsidiana (o un fragmento de obsidiana humeante) que lleva en el pecho. Este espejo le permitía ver todo lo que sucedía en el mundo y conocer los secretos de la humanidad.
Asociación con la Noche y el Norte: Está asociado intrínsecamente a la noche estrellada y se vincula con la dirección Norte (Mictlampa), el lugar de los muertos y la incertidumbre.
Encarnación Terrenal: Podía manifestarse en la Tierra bajo diferentes formas, incluida la de un jaguar (Tepeyollotl).
Color Simbólico: Se le vincula al color negro y al humo.
Rol Cósmico y Rivalidad
Rivalidad con Quetzalcóatl: Tezcatlipoca es el antagonista y el gemelo cósmico de Quetzalcóatl. Mientras Quetzalcóatl representa la luz, el orden y el sacrificio benéfico, Tezcatlipoca representa la oscuridad, el caos, el destino ineludible y la fuerza bruta.
Creador y Destructor: Es una figura dual. Participó activamente en la creación del mundo junto a Quetzalcóatl, pero también es responsable de la destrucción de las primeras eras o “Soles” (especialmente el Primer Sol, que él mismo presidió).
El Destino: Como dios de la Providencia, se creía que era quien regía el destino de los hombres y las naciones. Era impredecible: podía premiar con riqueza y poder, o castigar de forma cruel y repentina con desgracia o enfermedad.
Poderes y Elementos
Omnipresencia y Omnisciencia: Gracias a su espejo, su poder radicaba en su capacidad de ver y saberlo todo. Nadie podía ocultarle sus actos.
Señor de los Guerreros: Era el patrón de los guerreros y se le invocaba en batalla. El poder de la guerra no solo era físico sino estratégico, asociado a la astucia y la traición.
Magia Oscura: Se le vinculaba con la magia negra y los hechiceros.
Juicio Moral: Actuaba como un juez, probando a los hombres con tentaciones y castigando a aquellos que eran arrogantes o cometían faltas morales.
